Shop Drawing Revision Control in Steel Fabrication
A shop drawing describes how a steel member will be fabricated. Revision control keeps the shop, buyer and inspector working from the same released information. A useful drawing register records the drawing number, current revision, release status and the member marks affected by the issue.
Check what has actually been released
| Record | What it helps confirm |
|---|---|
| Drawing register | The current issue, reviewer status and members covered |
| Review comments and RFIs | Which questions are resolved and which still affect fabrication |
| Release or transmittal | What was issued for the next step, to whom and when |
| Cut lists and shop work packs | Whether downstream instructions reflect the same released drawing |
An approval status may still carry comments or conditions. Ask who confirms that the comments are closed and who releases the drawing for the affected work. The AASHTO/NSBA shop drawing guidance describes the roles involved in reviewing bridge fabrication drawings. Use your own contract to determine the approval sequence and responsibilities.
When a revision arrives after cutting
Suppose a girder connection drawing changes after the flange plates have been cut. Start by identifying the affected piece marks and their actual stage in the shop. The responsible teams can then determine whether the change affects those pieces or only a later operation. Keep the clarification, any required disposition, and the revised work pack together so the shop and inspector can see what was released.
What to send with a fabrication enquiry
Provide the drawing register and latest revisions along with the bill of quantities. Flag unresolved interfaces, drawings still under review, and the members needed first. This helps the fabricator distinguish work that can be planned from work that depends on an engineering release. See the design-to-dispatch workflow or share your drawing package for a scope review.
