Trial Assembly, Camber and Dimensional Control for Long Steel Girders | Kothari Chemicals Engineering Division

Long fabricated steel girders demand more than accurate cutting. A small variation at an early stage can become much more visible when members are assembled, coated, transported and connected at site. That is why controlled layout, fit-up and dimensional verification belong in the production plan from the beginning.

Start With the Approved Geometry

The controlled reference is the latest approved drawing package, not an earlier estimate, a marked-up print or a verbal instruction. Before fabrication starts, teams need clarity on member geometry, splice details, connection interfaces, required camber or profile, measurement references and inspection hold points.

Why Trial Assembly Matters

Trial assembly or pre-fit checks provide an opportunity to verify how components relate before they are released as finished members. Depending on the project, this can help identify alignment, interface or dimensional issues while correction remains more practical than it would be after dispatch.

It should not be treated as a generic promise that every project receives the same trial-assembly process. The exact requirement must follow the approved drawings, quality plan and customer or inspecting-authority requirements.

Camber and Distortion Need a Planned Response

Welding and assembly sequence can influence the final shape of a large member. Practical control begins with planning: defining the assembly sequence, identifying checks at meaningful stages and recording dimensions against the approved criteria. The goal is not to make a visual judgement at the end; it is to create a repeatable process that makes deviations visible early.

A Useful Pre-Dispatch Checkpoint

Before release, a project may require evidence such as:

  • Dimensional reports against the approved drawing
  • Fit-up or assembly inspection records
  • Welding and NDT documentation where specified
  • Coating or surface-protection records when included
  • Identification, packing and dispatch details

Kothari's capability information includes dedicated layout and checking areas, CNC drilling and cutting resources, multi-bay fabrication support and documented inspection capability. The exact controls used for a package remain project-specific.

Buyer Checklist

Ask a prospective fabricator how the team will establish the reference geometry, when dimensional checks occur, what records are released, and who is responsible for resolving a non-conformance before dispatch. These questions are more useful than a broad claim of “high precision.”
