Single-Piece Handling Capacity in Heavy Steel Fabrication
Single-piece handling capacity describes the size of an individual fabricated member a facility may be able to move under suitable conditions. It is separate from annual production tonnage. Kothari's Bhilai facilities publish single-piece handling capability up to 130 MT. The engineering team assesses feasibility against the weight, geometry, handling stages and available equipment for each package.
Identify the heaviest stage
Give the fabricator the estimated finished mass and the dimensions of the longest and widest members. Also ask which configuration controls the review. A member may be handled with temporary bracing, fixtures or attachments at one stage, then moved in a different configuration after inspection or coating. The shipping weight alone may leave out the controlling shop movement.
Check the route through the shop
| Stage | What to confirm with the supplier |
|---|---|
| Assembly and turnover | Which handling positions and orientations need to be assessed |
| Inspection and coating | Whether the assembled member fits the inspection area, booth and transfer route |
| Loading | Whether the loading bay can accommodate the member and proposed vehicle |
| Delivery | Who owns the route assessment, transport arrangements and site unloading |
For a long member, door clearances and transfer routes can rule out a sequence even where the weight appears feasible. Ask the shop to identify the controlling restriction and explain whether changing the assembly sequence or dispatch split would affect the drawings, inspection stages or site work.
Information to send with the enquiry
Include the latest drawing revision, piece weights and dimensions, any known centre-of-gravity information, temporary attachments and the required delivery boundary. Flag any stage where the member must turn or be transferred. Use this information for procurement review. The qualified project team determines and approves the actual lifting method and equipment.
Compare heavy steel fabrication capabilities and executed project references. For the transport side of a long girder package, see our dispatch planning guide.
